About the event
Dr. Peña is the founder and president of The Acequia Institute and remains a Full Professor at the University of Washington. He is Executive Project Manager of the "San Luis Food Sovereignty Initiative." Funded by The Colorado Health Foundation, Ceres Trust, BEA Fund, The Acequia Institute and other partners, the Initiative has rescued the historic R&R Market (established 1857) which is recognized as the oldest continuously operated business (grocery) in Colorado. The R&R is now the San Luis Peoples Market which is being re-organized as a community food cooperative. Important in this work is a mutual aid revolving loan fund providing no-interest loans to local farmers and artisan food producers to stock the shelves at the Market with slow, local, and "deep" foods.
